The "Birth" of LibraKnits
Luxurious Handmade Baby Hats
In the fall of 2006, Amanda Sawyer heard the words that no woman wants to hear; she was told that she might never be able to have children. She couldn't accept the medical establishment's dire prediction, so she got seven (yes, seven!) opinions. And the truth of her situation became clear - if she was ever going to be able to have babies, she would need to go through several surgeries and fertility treatments. And she needed to do it as soon as possible. So Sawyer, who had just completed a dual JD/MBA program and passed the Bar Exam, put her corporate dreams on hold and focused her energy on her health.
During the many doctor visits that followed her diagnosis, she needed something to help pass the time. So she picked up her knitting needles, and starting making luxurious handmade baby hats for her pregnant friends. And they loved them! They started asking her to make them as gifts for girlfriends with babies on the way! So Sawyer put all that education to good use and started her own small business - and LibraKnits was born.
"LibraKnits has allowed me the opportunity to turn one of the most difficult times in my life into one of the most rewarding and wonderful things I've ever done," she says. All that positive energy seems to have paid off. In October 2008, Sawyer finally
started her family.
And just as her family has grown, so has LibraKnits. Sawyer's first product, the Re sa Cap, has been spotted on the heads of celebrity babies like Jessica Alba's daughter, Honor Marie Warren, and Sarah Jessica Parker and Matthew Broderick's twin girls. It has also been featured in numerous television spots, magazines and mommy blogs. "Our goal is to create the most stylish and adorable baby hat we can," states Sawyer, "Each piece is crafted using sumptuous yarn chosen because it is unique as well as fashionable." Now LibraKnits produces several kinds of luxurious handmade baby accessories and has an ever-expanding pipeline of baby products.
Meanwhile, Sawyer has been able to find balance as a Work at Home Mom. "I am so lucky," Sawyer says. "If you had asked me at law school graduation where I thought I'd "be in five years," I never would have said I'd own my own business selling handmade baby hats. But life has a funny way of working out. My infertility crisis truly changed my life in every way and now I have the best of both worlds."
We would like to thank our friends and family for their support in this venture, as well as my customers, for making my dream a reality!!
